HVAC Stages

NOTE: Depending on your HVAC equipment, the number of stages and their exact meanings may vary.  Your system may not have all of the stages below, or you may have additional ones not specifically listed.  Your HVAC dealer can provide additional information regarding your specific equipment. 

 

We highly recommend that you enable American Standard® Diagnostics to allow your dealer to see information about your HVAC system performance.  

 

COOLING
Stage 1 Cooling	Cooling in single-stage systems or first-stage cooling in multiple-stage systems.
Stage 2 Cooling	Second-stage cooling in multiple-stage systems; used in high-demand scenarios.
★ Cooling does not typically go beyond two stages unless the HVAC system is fully variable speed. This requires that the compressor, outdoor fan, and indoor fan be variable speed. ★

 

HEATING
Stage 1 Heating	Indoor heat in single-stage systems or first-stage heating in multiple-stage systems.
Stage 2 Heating	Second-stage heating in multiple-stage systems; used in high-demand scenarios.
Stage 1 Aux Heating	First-stage auxiliary heating for heat pumps and multi-stage furnaces; provides supplemental gas or electric heat when the heat pump cannot meet demand.
Stage 2 Aux Heating	Second-stage auxiliary heating for heat pumps and multi-stage furnaces
Stage 3 Aux Heating	Third-stage auxiliary heating for heat pumps and multi-stage furnaces
